“Racing in this lovely European city is a terrible idea,” said the specialist in Formula One.

COMMENT: According to Christopher Sharp, the Madrid Grand Prix may be a sign of a wider issue in Formula One that could endanger Silverstone and Monza.

With a rich and lengthy history of competition on urban circuits, Formula 1 is best known for its prestigious Monaco Grand Prix, which has been held annually since 1929 and has long been the center of the glamorous side of the sport. Less than 20 minutes by train from Milan, Monza is located in the city’s royal park rather than in the middle of nowhere.

The calendar has featured tens of various street and city-based circuits since the championship began competing under the Formula 1 name in 1950. These include Baku in Azerbaijan and Pescara in Portugal.
