Sheffield United faces suspension following Everton loanee Mason Holgate’s horrifying challenge red card against Brighton.

Mason Holgate was sent off for his horrific tackle against Brighton and Hove Albion this afternoon, thus he will miss Sheffield United’s next three games. The Everton loanee was making his third appearance since leaving the team on loan, but after challenging Kaoru Mitoma too soon, he was sent for an early bath.

The incident occurred just 13 minutes into the match, and referee Stuart Attwell first booked Holgate before VAR Michael Oliver swiftly reported him to his pitchside monitor. After seeing numerous replays of the appalling tackle, Attwell changed his mind, and Holgate was sent off as a result.

The game was goalless at the beginning, but Brighton swiftly gained control thanks to their man advantage, winning 2-0 at Bramall Lane thanks to goals from Danny Welbeck and Facundo Buonanotte. In an attempt to shore things up, United then brought on defender Auston Trusty off the bench. He is now expected to be called up for the forthcoming matches against Wolves, Arsenal, and Bournemouth.

On social media, Holgate’s tackle was immediately called one of the worst of the season, and many people questioned how referee Attwell could have failed to see its significance in real time.
