The bad news is that the Boston Red Sox are starting early, which means everything has to go perfectly for them to be competitive in 2024.
Second baseman Vaughn Grissom may miss Opening Day due to a groin strain, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.
It’s a groin strain for Vaughn Grissom. Alex Cora: Opening Day is doubtful.
In the trade that sent Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves in the summer, the 23-year-old Grissom was acquired. One of the most intriguing storylines for the Sox in 2024 will be his tantalizing upside and following growth; if he works out, he might be a key player for the team going forward.
Grissom played in games at each of the previous two major league seasons after making his major league debut with the Braves in 2022.
In 40 games, he batted.291 while with the Braves in 2022. In 2023, he only played in 23 games, but he hit.280. Due to doubts about his shortstop talent, Atlanta signed Orlando Arcia to a long-term contract. He’ll play second base while Trevor Story plays shortstop for the Red Sox.
The Sox plan to use Enmanuel Valdez at second base in Grissom’s absence. He was traded to the Houston Astros in 2022, and over the previous two seasons, he has played in games for the Red Sox.
Boston is expected to finish last in the American League East this season, as it did the previous one.
