There is one former Boston Red Sox player that is still available in free agency.
Despite having a fantastic 2023 season, six-time All-Star J.D. Martinez is still searching for his next opportunity as Opening Day draws near. Martinez hit 33 home runs and drove in 103 runs during his free agent signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the previous offseason.
Though he has been connected to several teams, he hasn’t yet discovered his next chance. Still, it sounds like a deal might be reached soon. According to Craig Mish of SportsGrid, Martinez and the Miami Marlins are apparently in talks over a potential trade.
“Free Agent J.D. Martinez and the Marlins have had recent discussions,” Mish stated. “It’s not a fit, at least not right now, as Miami appears to favor the Josh Bell and Jake Burger alternating DH combination. Martinez reportedly wants a (two-year) contract.”
Martinez, who has become as one of baseball’s top designated hitters in recent years, will undoubtedly be able to contribute to the team he joins.
Before joining the Dodgers, he played for five seasons with the Boston Red Sox and was a star.
Martinez was an All-Star four times in his five seasons in Boston. Martinez was named an All-Star only once, during the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, when there was no All-Star Game.
Miami surprised a few by winning 84 games in the previous campaign and securing a position in the National League Wild Card. Hiring a person such as Martinez could significantly contribute to making progress in 2024.
