Report: Dejounte Murray makes a shocking statement after defeating Celtics in…

The Hawks pulled off their second straight win against the Celtics on Thursday night thanks to the heroics of Dejounte Murray.

The Hawks guard scored a career-high 44 points including the game-winner with 0.1 seconds left in overtime of Atlanta’s 123-122 win. Murray saved some of his best work for overtime, scoring all of the Hawks’ 11 points in the frame on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, including a mid-range jumper of Jrue Holiday as time expired.

However, on the heels of Atlanta’s fourth straight win, Murray was still not pleased with himself after the victory. In fact, he had a harsh opinion of his play despite a career-best point output.

“We didn’t use a back-to-back as an excuse,” Murray told Bally Sports South postgame. “We came out and competed. These are he games I want to be a part of. I still feel like I played awful. I don’t want to take that many shots but I know Kobe (Bryant) would be proud of me. At the end of the day, we fought at a high level to the end and had a great team win.”

A closer look at Murray’s box score makes his self-criticism a little more reasonable. Murray scored 44 points on 44 field goal tries, shooting just 40 percent from the field overall (18-of-44) and 30 percent from 3-point range (6-of-19). That inefficient effort led Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla getting testy with a reporter in Atlanta about his team’s defense on Murray through the entire night.

“You better not say we couldn’t guard Murray,” Mazzulla said. “He had 44 points on 44 shots…I thought we played great defense on him.”

Jrue Holiday got the assignment on Murray during his final play sequence and could only tip his cap to the powerful scorer after his third game-winner of the season.

“I think he had a good take,” Holiday said. “It was a difficult shot but he had making difficult shots all night. Give it to the man and he made the game-winner.”

Murray finished the two-game set against the Celtics after 37 points and seven assists per game as he solidified himself as the No. 1 choice in the Hawks lineup with Trae Young sidelined. Atlanta and Murray will have a chance to see Boston in the first round of the playoffs if they manage to win their two games in the play-in event next month.
