An insider from the Bills explains what the Jaguars are getting in Gabe Davis.

Wide receiver Gabe Davis is a free agent that the Jacksonville Jaguars signed to a three-year, $39 million contract. The team is hoping Davis has a strong season. The former Buffalo Bill will be expected to step up and try to surpass last year’s disappointing passing game for the Jaguars, who will be without Calvin Ridley.

However, what specifically are the Jaguars acquiring in Davis? Bills Central’s Nathaniel Marrero explains it to us.

What prevented Gabe Davis from signing a new contract with the Bills? Was anyone interested?
Marrero: Given the Bills’ cap restrictions, I believe it was known going into the season that Gabe Davis would likely be playing his final season. They had several free agents in addition to Davis and were more than $40 million over the cap. Buffalo would have signed him back on a team-friendly deal, I’m sure of it, but it could never have matched what Jacksonville offered him.

What is Gabe Davis’ strongest suit?
Marrero: Davis has a lot of playmaking ability. Since joining the league in 2020, he has led the Bills in receiving yards per reception and has never had an average of fewer than 15 yards per catch. Despite his ups and downs over his career, Davis was typically the beneficiary of big plays when he did receive the ball. Being a reliable target in the red zone, he never finished a season with fewer than six touchdowns.

What shortcomings does Gabe Davis have?
Marrero: The quantity of targets and receptions he had last season was quite inconsistent. In addition to five games in which he failed to record a single reception, Davis also had four games in which he recorded at least four catches. Throughout the season, there were also several instances where it was evident he and Josh Allen weren’t on the same page. Davis must not vanish from several games if Jacksonville wants to get the most out of him.

Will the Bills find it difficult to replace Davis?
Marrero: If Buffalo doesn’t choose a receiver early in the draft, I believe they will lose his big play potential and field-stretching abilities. Although I wouldn’t say that Davis’s departure was the most upsetting for the Bills, they will undoubtedly need a man to step up and match his production when the season begins.
