One of the more unexpected teams in the early going of the 2024 MLB season is the Boston Red Sox. They are off to a 7-3 start and are keeping up with the New York Yankees, who are playing extremely well, in what is expected to be a fierce AL East fight this season.
Sadly for the Red Sox, it’s becoming a little harder to stay up with the times. On Tuesday afternoon, they learned the heartbreaking news that Trevor Story, the team’s starting shortstop, would not be returning to the field this season.
It was revealed that Story would need surgery to fix a fracture in his shoulder, which would finish the season. The team’s chief baseball officer, Craig Breslow, stated that Story will require at least six months off to recuperate after the procedure, which is scheduled for this Friday.
When the Red Sox were playing the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, April 5, the fracture happened. When Story sustained the catastrophic injury, he was trying to dive stop a hit by Angels star Mike Trout.
Story was finally returning to normalcy as he started all eight games for the Red Sox before to the injury. Following a stint at second base to begin his Boston career, Story returned to shortstop in 2022. Regretfully, injuries have dogged him and the squad during his time in Beantown.
Story only appeared in 94 games during his rookie season with the Red Sox due to severe injuries to his left foot and right hand. He only appeared in 43 games the previous season due to a delayed recovery from surgery on his right throwing elbow.
Now, the season will end after just eight games this year. Story signed a six-year, $140 million contract with Boston during the 2022 offseason, but it hasn’t worked out as well as everyone had planned. He is already halfway through the deal.
