Just eight days before The Masters’ first round, world number 28 Justin Thomas broke up with his caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay due to his lack of form.
Golfer Justin Thomas made the “incredibly difficult” choice to break up with his caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay, only a few days before the 2024 Masters. After working with Thomas since 2021, Mackay—who caddied for Phil Mickelson for 25 years—and Thomas won the PGA Championship at Southern Hills in 2022.
Since then, though, Thomas’s performance has declined; he began 2024 poorly and placed 71st in the FedEx Cup standings the previous year. At both The Players Championship and the Genesis Invitational, he was cut.
Just in; With the Masters approaching, Justin Thomas makes a “very tough” decision…
“While incredibly difficult for me to say, Bones and I have parted ways,” he wrote on social media after sharing the news, adding that he will always be grateful for their time together.
“The things we’ve been able to accomplish together—the PGA Championship in 2022, the Presidents Cup, and the Ryder Cups—were all unforgettable experiences,” Thomas said in reflection on their accomplishment. Throughout a challenging phase of my career, his guidance both on and off the course has been a boon, and he has been there at every turn.
“I’m confident that the future holds amazing things for the two of us. I will always consider him and his family to be friends, and I wish him the best of luck.”
Prior to joining Mickelson’s team in 1992, Mackay, now 58, started his career caddying for Larry Mize, Scott Simpson, and Curtis Strange. Mickelson’s remarkable PGA Tour breakthrough came next.
Out of Mickelson’s 45 PGA Tour victories, including five major championships, Mackay bagged all but four of them. In 2017, prior to splitting with Mickelson, Mackay had a double knee replacement.
