[April 20, 2024, 2:19 am] Cephas: Andrew Berry, general manager of the Browns, met with the media one week before to the NFL Draft to talk about all things Browns before the most important week of the offseason.
Before the NFL Draft, Browns General Manager Andrew Berry began his yearly State of the Union speech with the words, “This is one of my favorite weeks of the year because it is like the first week of school… and we are just a week outside the NFL Draft.”
We’re getting closer to feeling like football season is almost here with the arrival of April. While the front office is hard at work putting the final touches on their NFL Draft preparation, Cleveland Browns players are back in town for the start of organized practice.
Cleveland won’t have a first-round pick again and won’t have to start counting down until Pick 54 in the second round. Despite not having a first-round selection in the previous two rounds, Andrew Berry assembled two reasonably good draft classes and, more crucially, selected impact players in both.
Cleveland won’t have a first-round pick again and won’t have to start counting down until Pick 54 in the second round. Despite not having a first-round selection in the previous two rounds, Andrew Berry assembled two reasonably good draft classes and, more crucially, selected impact players in both.
With their first pick in 2022, Berry chose cornerback MJ Emerson, who has emerged as a star and has a genuine chance to be a great in this league. Berry then followed that up in 2023 by trading Elijah Moore for their second-round pick and selecting Dawand Jones in the fourth round. Jones appears to have the makings of a very good starter.
Berry was questioned on Monday regarding his and this organization’s opinions of the draft. “Long-term investment in the roster has always been the focus of the draft,” he stated. We truly consider “How are these players going to effect the Cleveland Browns in 2025–2027?” when making our analysis.”
This allows Browns supporters to see how their general manager handles both the roster construction and the draft. Few winning teams depend on rookies to make a significant contribution in their first season. Good teams select one or two guys with potential to make an impact and then work to develop the remaining players in the class into NFL players.
That should give you a sense of what to expect on Thursday night and thrill Browns supporters about what to expect from last year’s draft picks. Andrew Berry is going to carry out his plan to the farthest extent possible.
