Similar to the running backs, this group of New Orleans Saints position players appeared to have a fairly clear-cut plan up until an unexpected setback occurred during the veteran minicamp.
Juwan Johnson, the team’s leader in offensive snaps and receptions the previous season, required foot surgery. His injury’s recuperation period is rather unclear; the only information available thus far comes from an ESPN story indicating the Saints were hopeful he would be ready for the regular season to begin.
Despite having a dismal statistical season the previous year, Johnson was still firmly established as the team’s primary receiving tight end heading into minicamp. Given his size and speed profile, Johnson continues to be one of the more distinctive playmakers in this Saints system.
It is not ideal to lose Johnson for any length of training camp or the regular season. Nonetheless, it does present the Saints with a chance to examine the remainder of their roster and see how those players might mesh with new offensive coach Klint Kubiak’s offensive philosophy.

a burning query
Is this offense now overly concerned about Juwan Johnson’s foot injury?
Although there is cause for concern, it is probably too soon to declare the situation to be serious, particularly if the ESPN report is accurate and Johnson is not forced to miss any regular season games.
