Although Caitlin Clark reached yet another extremely noteworthy career milestone, the rookie’s victory over the Dallas Wings was ultimately in vain. It was the Indiana Fever’s fifteenth loss of the year. After the game, Clark was questioned about breaking the record, but it was understandable that he was not in a festive mood.
After shattering the record for most assists in a WNBA game, Caitlin Clark made headlines once more. However, she did not win the Indiana Fever’s 101-93 loss to the Dallas Wings.
Clark recorded 19 assists in a postseason game played just over a year later on September 28, 2021, to exceed Courtney Vandersloot’s 18 for Chicago Sky against Indiana on August 31, 2020.
With 2:22 remaining, the rookie tied the game at 93-93 by setting up Kelsey Mitchell for a historic basket. However, Dallas went on an 8-0 run to win, making the rookie’s feat a mirage.
Aliyah Boston led Indiana with 28 points, while NaLyssa Smith added 13 points and 12 rebounds. Clark finished the game with a total of 24 points.
Playing in just her 26th professional game, Clark’s records are falling all around her, surpassing her previous career high of 13 assists.
Her season total of over 200 assists makes her only the second rookie in WNBA history to accomplish this feat.
She is a member of an elite group that also includes Ticha Penicheiro, who finished the 1998 season with 225 assists.
The record for rookie single-game assists, achieved on July 29, 1998, stood at 16, which was previously held by Penicheiro.
After the game, Clark was mainly dejected and told the reporters that she is still working to get better: “I just try to set my teammates up for success.” I believe that occasionally I am nearly overpassing. There may have been a few instances where a turnover occurred in place of a pass. I’m sure I can shoot the ball, but my main goal is to overwhelm Boston. I’m constantly watching our post players.
It was a fantastic night for the Wings in what had generally been a challenging campaign, despite the excitement around Clark.
Clark told the reporters after the game, looking somewhat sad, that she is still trying to get better, saying, “I just try to set my teammates up for success.” Sometimes I feel like I’m almost overpassing. There might have been one or two occasions where a turnover took the place of a pass. I know how to shoot the ball, but my main objective is to destroy Boston. I keep a close eye on our post players.
In spite of all the buzz around Clark, it was a wonderful night for the Wings in what had otherwise been a difficult campaign.
