The Phillies made a number of roster changes on Friday afternoon, placing left fielder Austin Hays on the 10-day injured list.
According to Phillies manager Rob Thomson, Hays’ left hamstring strain is comparable to Brandon Marsh’s early-June injury. Marsh was activated on June 12 after being placed on the IL on June 3.
Johan Rojas and Weston Wilson will see more playing time in Hays’ absence. As the offensive component of that combination, Wilson performed admirably on Thursday, beginning the game against Jordan Montgomery, a lefty, and single, doubling, and just missing a potentially fair three-run double.
Kolby Allard, a left-hander, has been optioned to Triple A, while Taijuan Walker is expected return early next week. Allard allowed five runs in 13 innings while pitching well in two starts and one big relief appearance.
Pitcher Max Lazar (right) and outfielder Cal Stevenson (left) are promoted from Triple A. Both were added to the 40-man roster after having their contracts chosen.
Stevenson, who excels offensively, is a natural centre fielder and excellent defender who has played for Triple A Lehigh Valley for the majority of the past two seasons. This season, he has slashed.307/.420/.488 with one less walk than strikeout. In 2022 and 2023, he will play 29 games in the major leagues for the A’s and Giants.
After starting the season with 10⅓ scoreless innings at Double A, Lazar had a 2.40 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 30 innings with Lehigh Valley. He had a 0.00 ERA and 0.49 WHIP in 11 outings, earning him the title of June’s Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Month.
