The Alabama football team has won three College Football Playoff national championship trophies and routinely wins at least 11 games every season since 2014. Nick Saban, Alabama’s famed head coach, led the way. On both sides of the ball, the Crimson Tide have also had an abundance of outstanding talent. Tua Tagovailoa, a left-handed quarterback, is maybe the best Crimson Tide football player to wear the crimson, grey, and white in the last ten years, even though he did not win the Heisman Trophy.
During his time with the Crimson Tide, Tagovailoa—the program’s record holder of many single-season statistics—won a national title, was selected to the first team of the SEC, was a consensus All-American, and received the Maxwell Award. But Roman Harper, a former NFL safety and current host of SEC Network, claims that Tagovailoa is actually the third greatest quarterback in the SEC since 2014. He is neither the first nor the second-best.

After an amazing 11-year NFL career, safety Roman Harper—a four-year standout with the Alabama football program from 2002 to 2005—has moved to work for the SEC Network. Harper did, however, have no ill will towards his former school, where he was twice named an All-SEC player. He revealed his list of the best ten SEC quarterbacks since 2014 on Thursday. Tua Tagovailoa, the first quarterback from Alabama, came in third. Rather, Tagovailoa was surpassed in the finish line by two LSU Tigers, the Crimson Tide’s bitter rival.
With 87 passing touchdowns in his career, Tagovailoa is the record holder for the most for the Alabama Crimson Tide. In addition, he ranks in the top five in school history for passing touchdowns in a single season (43), passing yards in a single season (3.966), and passing yards in a career (7,442). He also won one of the two College Football Playoff championship games that Alabama football went to. In the past, Harper chose Jayden Daniels of LSU over Tagovailoa. Daniels has a Heisman Trophy, but statistically, he is far less impressive than Tagovailoa. Daniels at centre, however, never got LSU to the CFP. Two other Alabama quarterbacks, Jalen Hurts and Bryce Young, rank in the top ten SEC pass producers since 2014. Harper’s list includes them both.
