Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden responds, “The most extravagant thing I’ve ever done in my life made everyone go crazy…

Bruce Dickinson, the frontman of Iron Maiden, has disclosed “the most decadent thing” he has ever done.

In a recent interview with The Independent, which was released to commemorate 40 years since Iron Maiden became the first Western rock group to do a fully produced live tour in Soviet Europe, the admission was made.

Dickinson claims that while on tour, a man who was offering to sell him and his bandmates a sack full of caviar that had fallen off a Russian ship contacted them in their hotel.

The singer recalls, “This guy comes up with a bin liner full of caviar.” We were all inebriated and exclaiming, ‘Come on then, how much?’ He said, “It’s $100,” after taking out a half-kilo tin of caviare. “$100?,” I think to myself. That is really inexpensive.

While Iron Maiden was touring Europe in 1984 to promote their album Powerslave, photographer Ross Halfin was trailing along. It’s said that Halfin managed to talk the caviar vendor down to $50 a tin.

Dickinson says, “We said, ‘Have you got any more?'” Returned with five kilogrammes, resembling an oil drum filled with caviare. Everyone lost their minds. We could not have eaten the ten kilogrammes of caviar we most likely possessed.

“I think that drinking vodka and eating a tablespoon of caviar is the most decadent thing I have ever done in my life.” Without the baked beans, it would have been a scene from Tommy (1975), a rock opera by The Who.
