The Detroit Lions are doing all in their power to make it back to the NFC Championship game before 2023—a feat they last accomplished in 1991.
In addition to re-signing important players like cornerback Emmanuel Moseley and kicker Michael Badgley, the Lions are actively looking into possible trade possibilities.
Interestingly, there are strong hints—shared by managing editor Jeff Rison of The Lions Wire—that Detroit is considering making a big move for Cleveland Browns corner Greg Newsome II.
Lions of Detroit: May Make a Play for the Starting Corner
Risdon’s credible sources indicate that the Detroit Lions have begun talks, or at least shown interest, in starting defender Greg Newsome II of the Cleveland Browns. This news follows the Browns’ recent declaration—as cited by the Washington Post—that they are willing to consider trade proposals for one of their corners.
“Several general managers stated that the Cleveland Browns have indicated they are willing to part with one of their best cornerbacks in an effort to balance salaries following years of excessive spending.”
Cleveland is home to one of the NFL’s top cornerback groups, if not the best, with Denzel Ward, Martin Emerson, and Greg Newsome. But as Newsome heads into the fourth year of his rookie contract, Risdon thinks he’s the perfect fit. After struggling as a nickel in Cleveland, Newsome—who was originally an outside corner—might be able to return to his preferred position if he moves to Detroit.
In exchange for the former first-round pick’s services, Risdon suggests the Lions give up a 2024 third-round selection and a 2025 fifth-round selection. As his rookie contract is about to expire, Detroit would also be prudent to secure the corner. Risdon’s fictitious trade scenario calls for Detroit to sign Newsome to a $41.5 million, three-year contract with a $22.5 million guaranteed.
Greg Newsome II is a fourth-year NFL player.
As a rookie with the Cleveland Browns, Newsome—the 26th overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft—racked up 37 tackles and nine passes defended. In 2022, he followed it up with six passes defended and 42 tackles. Newsome just finished his finest statistical season in 2023 with 14 passes defensed and 49 tackles. In addition, he racked up two interceptions, one of which was a pick-six from Baltimore Ravens MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson.
