Report: Three lefties remain in the race for the bullpen after the Red Sox make ten roster cuts.

Fort Myers, Florida: Reassigning left-handed relievers Jorge Benitez and Cam Booser to minor league spring training camp and optioning lefty reliever Joe Jacques to Triple-A Worcester were among the ten roster cuts made by the Red Sox on Monday.

Tyler Heineman, a catcher, was also optioned by Boston to Worcester. It sent infielders Nick Sogard, Jamie Westbrook, and Nick Yorke, right-handed relievers Justin Hagenman and Chase Shugart, and outfielder/infielder Dalton Guthrie to minor league camp.

Additionally, manager Alex Cora disclosed on Monday that Chris Murphy, a left-handed reliever, will get an MRI on his elbow. As a result, just Brennan Bernardino, Lucas Luetge, and Joely Rodriguez—three left-handed relievers—remain in major league camp to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Within the 40-man roster is Bernardino. As non-roster invites to big league camp, Rodriguez and Luetge would need to be added if they made the Opening Day roster.

Additionally, the catching competition shrunk to three once Heineman was selected. Reese McGuire and Connor Wong are the two most likely starters for Boston to start the season. However, as a non-roster invitee, two-time Gold Glover Roberto Peréz is also in the running.

On Monday, Cora talked about Murphy’s injuries.

“The elbow area is not healing well from the last one,” Cora stated. We shall so observe what transpires there. Naturally, concern is present. However, there will probably be more tomorrow morning.

Booser, a non-roster invitee, left a lasting impression at camp.

Cora stated, “Him and Benitez (can help this year).” “Cam threw from the left side, 98, 99. His offspeed deliveries were landing for strikes. It began at Worcester during the latter half of the previous season. He was here for that reason. He performed a fantastic job. And Benitez can turn into a guy if he can throw strikes. He played two innings yesterday. He performed a fantastic job.

According to Cora, Yorke, a second baseman and Boston’s No. 10 prospect on MassLive’s list of the Top 25 Red Sox, will probably also be introduced to left field this season.
