Many were drawing comparisons between Caleb Williams and Patrick Mahomes even before the Chicago Bears selected him first overall in this year’s NFL draft. Fresh off of Williams’ spectacular preseason performance with the Bears, Tyreek Hill, a star for the Miami Dolphins, became the first to hint at the similarities on Saturday. Williams, meanwhile, isn’t paying much attention to the high accolades and downplayed the similarities to Mahomes on Saturday night.
“It’s respect,” Williams explained to reporters after the conversation. “Well, that’s fantastic, but my name is Caleb Williams. It’s Patrick Mahomes, all the way. Tyreek Hill is what it is. Much love to them and all that; I’ve met and spoken with both of them; that kind of thing; but, our goal is to help the Chicago Bears win games. Da Bears.
With just seven seasons as a starter under his belt, Mahomes is obviously already on track to be regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in history. He is vying for his fourth Super Bowl victory. Williams has not yet taken a snap in the regular season. The latter, however, has captured the attention of Chicago and many others with a vibrant start to his rookie preseason, displaying big-play—dare we say Mahomes-esque—freestyling in back-to-back victories.
Bears fans, who already have high expectations for the USC product in 2024, will likely find it encouraging that Williams will not openly accept the comparison to the Kansas City Chiefs great.
