Mark Giordano, a seasoned defensemen with the Maple Leafs, lost his father.
Paul Giordano unexpectedly passed away on Thursday night, the team said in a quick statement on its X account early on Friday evening.
The Leafs wrote in the article, “Our prayers are with Mark and his family during this extremely difficult time and we ask for their privacy.”
Giordano’s two former NHL teams, the Seattle Kraken and the Calgary Flames, both expressed their sympathy.
The Flames sent their sincere sympathies to Mark and the Giordano family. “You are in our prayers and thoughts during this very trying time.”
Giordano was the Flames’ captain from 2013 to 21 and played for the team for 15 seasons.
Giordano captained the Kraken throughout their 2021–2022 season of expansion before being dealt to the Leafs in March of 2022.
The Kraken wrote on X, “We’d like to send our heartfelt condolences to Gio, his family, and loved ones during this extremely difficult time.”
On Saturday, the Leafs will host the Anaheim Ducks.
